Visby

Visby is the largest city in the Swedish island of Gotland. The area of the city is
12.08 km² and the population is about 22,000. Visby’s name comes from the
ancient words Vi and By. Vi means sacrificial place and By means village. Visby is
the best-preserved medieval town in Scandinavia and it is a part of the UNESCO
World Heritage List.

Visby on Rootsi saare Ojamaa suurim linn. Visby pindala on 12,08 km² ning seal elab umbes 22 000 inimest. Linna nimi Visby tuleb vanapõhjakeelsestest sõnadest Vi ja by. Vi tähendab ohverduspaika ja by küla. Visby puhul on tegemist kõige paremini säilinud keskaegse linnaga Skandinaavias ja see kuulub UNESCO maailmapärandi nimekirja.IMG_4383

It is possible to travel to Visby by both plane and ship. Although there is no daily ship travel, Tallink, the Estonian ship company, organizes a certain amount of cruises on the Helsinki-Tallinn-Visby line. We chose to travel to Visby via a Tallink cruise line. I hadn’t even made it to the island yet when I filled half of my memory card with incredible photos of the sea 😀

Visbysse saab sõita lennuki ja laevaga. Eestist igapäevaselt Visbyga laevaühendust ei ole. Igal suvel korraldab Tallink teatud arvu erikruiise Helsingi-Tallinn-Visby. Ka meie käisime Tallinki erikruiisiga Ojamaa saarel.  Ma polnud veel saarele jõudnudki, kui juba pool “filmi” täis pildistatud 😀IMG_4139IMG_5667IMG_5668IMG_5672

Everything was so pretty already at the harbor when we started our visit.

Juba sadamas, laevalt maha tulles, on ümbrus kõik nii ilus.IMG_4216

It is good to walk along the promenade from the harbor to the old town.

Sadamast vanalinna müüride vahele on hea kõndida mööda rannapromenaadi.IMG_5429IMG_4236IMG_5419IMG_4408IMG_4223

The most important historic sites of Visby are 3.4 km long and on some parts 11 meters high city wall and old church ruins. During the 12-13th century there were 92 churches on the island, nowadays most of them are in ruins. Old town Visby contains 10 of these ruins. Those churches are Gothic and Romanesque style. The first churces in Gotland were built as early as the years between 1150-1250. I think they are so pretty! Visby is also known for its blooming roses in summer. Visby hosts the Week of the Middle Ages every August during the 32nd week of the year. This week was first celebrated in 1984. During the medieval week celebrations, many medieval style events take place, such as the performance of jesters, market, the battle of peaks. The wealth of Visby goes back to 12-13th century, when there were many cargo ships of different Hanseatic towns going through the harbor of Visby. Visby is one of the few cities next to the Baltic sea region that hasn’t been destroyed by war, depredation and fires.

Visby ajalooliselt tähtsamad vaatamisväärsused on 3,4 km pikkune ja kohati kuni 11 meetri kõrgune ringmüür ja vanad kirikuvaremed. Kirikuvaremeid on seal tõesti palju. 12. -13. sajandil oli üle kogu saare kokku koguni 92 kirikut, mis tänapäeval on enamik varemeis. Visby vanalinnas on kokku 10 kiriku varemed. Kirikud on gooti ja romaani stiilis. Esimesed kirikud ehitati juba aastatel 1150-1250. Minu meelest on need nii ilusad! Visby linn on tuntud ka suvel õitsevate rooside poolest. Iga aasta augustis, aasta 32. nädalal, toimub Visbys keskaja nädal. Keskaja nädalat peeti esimest korda aastal 1984. Keskaja nädalal toimub hulgaliselt keskajale iseloomulikke üritusi, näiteks narride etteaste, turg, piigivõitlus. Visby linna jõukus sai alguse juba 12.-13. sajandil, kui läbi siinse sadama kulgesid hansalinnade kaubalastid. Visby on üks väheseid linnu Läänemere ääres, mis on pääsenud sõjakoledusest, rüüstetest ja põlengutest.IMG_4279IMG_4407IMG_4276IMG_5503IMG_5443IMG_4481IMG_5505IMG_5510IMG_5511IMG_5512IMG_4321

Gotland has its own horse and sheep breed. Gotlandsruss, the local horse breed, is probably a close relative of the Estonian horse breed. The local sheep breed is from the Viking times. There are many popular souvenirs related to sheep: sheepskin, yarn shops everywhere, toy shops has sheep-like toys, magnets with sheep picture..

Ojamaa saarel on oma hobuse- ja lambatõug. Kohalik hobusetõug gotlandsruss on tõenäoliselt Eesti hobuse lähedane sugulane. Kohalik lambatõug gutefår pärineb juba viikingiaegadest. Ojamaal on populaarsed suveniirid kõik seotud lambaga: lambanahad, igal pool on lõngapoed, mänguasjapoodides on lambateemalised mänguasjad, suveniirid on lambateemalised..IMG_4217IMG_4353

The streets of the old town are all narrow, with many flowers and romantic scenery.

Vanalinna tänavad on kitsad lillelised ja romantilised.IMG_4310IMG_5567IMG_4482

A beautiful panoramic view over the City and the cathedral you can see on the Norderklint street.

Ilus panoraamvaade linnale ja katedraalile avaneb Norderklinti tänava juures asuvalt vaateplatvormilt.IMG_4346IMG_4356IMG_4406Even the mail boxes are interesting and colorful here.

Isegi postkastid on huvitavad ja värvilised.IMG_4380IMG_4368

The houses look like they are from a fairytale.

Visby majad on muinasjutulised.IMG_4409IMG_4296.JPGIMG_5484IMG_5437IMG_5462IMG_5496IMG_4477Between the City walls it feels like the time has stopped. It is so calm and quiethere. People are in their thoughts when walking around. You can only hear the song of the birds. For a moment you even forget that time and clock even exist. And when you go outside the City walls, there are so many cars and people running around.

Vanalinna müüride vahel elu nagu seisaks. Kõik on nii vaikne ja rahulik. Inimesed jalutavad omaette ringi. Kostub ainult linnulaulu. Korraks isegi unustad ära, et aeg ja kell üldse eksisteerivad. Nii kui müüridest väljapoole minna hakkab selline inimeste ja autode sagimine pihta.

It is good to travel by boat. You can relax and enjoy good meals and drinks.

Hea on laevaga reisida. Saab lõõgastuda ja nautida head sööki ja jooki kogu laevareisi vältel:DIMG_4416IMG_4435IMG_4120
