Menorca

Menorca is an island in the Mediterranean sea which belongs to Spain. Menorca is one of the Balearic Islands. Menorca is a bit less known than its neighbor island Ibiza and Mallorca. This makes it a bit quieter and calmer place with not so many tourists. Menorca is a perfect destination for families with children. There is incredibly beautiful nature, light blue water. Most of the beaches are small in the bay in the middle of the cliffs, there are also some longer sandy beaches.

Menorca on Hispaaniale kuuluv saar Vahemeres. Menorca kuulub Baleaari saarestiku hulka. Menorca on veidi vähem tuntud kui teised Baleaari saared Mallorca ja Ibiza, seetõttu on seal veidi vähem turiste ja rahulikum olla. Menorca on väga sobivaks sihtkohaks lastega peredele. Menorcal on uskumatult ilus loodus ja helesinine vesi. Rannad on enamuses kaljude vahel lahesoppides, ka mõni üksik pikk liivarand.IMG_6837Menorca island is about 15 km wide and 50 km long. It is possible to get there by plane and ferry from Mallorca and Barcelona. A ferry ride takes approximately 1.5 hours between Ciutadella de Menorca and Alcudia in Mallorca. It takes six hours to travel between Mahon and Palma de Mallorca. There are around 91 thousand inhabitants.

DSC08705There are many prehistoric antiquities. The island has also named as a huge open-air museum.

Menorca on erakordselt rikas eelajalooliste muististe poolest. Saart on nimetatud tohutuks vabaõhumuuseumiks.DSCN5949DSC08510.JPGThe major towns are Mahon and Ciutadella de Menorca. Mahon, in the local dialect Maó is the capital city of Menorca. These two cities are located on the other side of the island from each other, for about one hour drive away. Mahon has one of the largest natural harbors in the world. It is also said to be the birthplace of mayonnaise.

Menorca peamisteks linnadeks on Ciutadella de Menorca ja pealinn Mahon, kohalikus dialektis Maó. Linnad asuvad teine teisel pool saart, umbes tunniajase sõidu kaugusel. Pealinnal Mahonil on üks maailma suurimaid looduslikke sadamaid. Mahoni peetakse ka majoneesi sünnikohaks.DSC_1999DSC07360DSC07379Near Mahon there is the Isabel II Fortress on La Mola peninsula, which was built in the 18th century when there were threats of a possible British invasion.

Mahoni lähedal on Isabel II kindlus La Mola poolsaarel, mis on ehitatud 18. sajandil, kui Britid ähvardasid uut sissetungi Menorcale.DSC08605DSC08622DSC08601The highest point in Menorca is the 358 meters high El Toro hill which is located in the middle of the island. It offers magnificent views over the entire island from the top of the hill.

Menorca kõige kõrgem punkt on 358 meetriga El Toro mägi, mis asub saare keskel ning seega avaneb mäe tipust suurepärane vaade üle terve saare. DSC08678DSC08669IMG-20141213-WA0001.jpgCiutadella de Menorca was the capital city of the island during the Muslim dominion until 1722. The island got its new capital when Richard Kane moved the courts of justice and the government offices to Mahon. There is a very pretty old town in Ciutadella and Es Born square what is considered to be one of the most beautiful squares in Spain. Es Born is surrounded by medieval streets, palaces, castles and churches. In the same square you can find the Town Hall and the Born Theatre. The city of Ciutadella is small enough for discovering it on foot. At the harbor of Ciutadella there is a club area, called el Puerto. It has several bars and clubs, larger and smaller with different music styles. Many of them have bar on the roof. Some of the famous Spanish artists are performing in Kopas club, such as Danny Romero and Jose de Rico. They have made some of my favorite Spanish songs. The entrance to most of the clubs are free of charge. There are workers walking around and sharing coupons that gives you free shots, chupitos. The nightclub Space is the biggest one and with most expensive ticket for entry. Around the harbour there are also many restaurants.

Going from the El Born square to old town via Ses Voltes avenue you will end up next to the Cathedral. The Cathedral was built in 14th century on top of an ancient Arab mosque. Ses Voltes aveue is known for their arches. Under the arches you will find many shops and restaurants.

A bit farther from the city center there is Sant Nicolau Castle. The castle is strategically located at the entrance of the Ciutadella port. This tower was a defense point built by order of the Spaniards at the end of the 18th century due to the many attacks by sea the island suffered in the past.

Klubidest edasi vanalinna poole minnes, leiab hulgaliselt restorane.

El Borni väljakult, mööda Ses Voltesi tänavat vana linna poole liikudes jõuab Ciutadella katedraalini. Katedraal on ehitatud gooti stiilis 14. sajandil, vana Araabia mošee kohale. Ses Voltesis avenüü on tuntud oma võlvkaarte poolest. Võlvkaarte all on mitmeid poode ja restorane.

Kesklinnast veidikene eemal on Sant Nicolau kindlus. Kindlus on strateegiliselt ehitatud Ciutadella sadama sissepääsu juurde. Torn on ehitatud kaitsepunktina 18. sajandil hispaanlaste tellimusel, kuna merelt rünnati saart pidevalt.DSCN6248DSCN6198DSCN6221

There is no beach in Ciutadella. The closest beaches are about 3 km away in Cala Santandria and Caleta. A bit further away are Cala’n Blanes, Cala’n Forcat, Cala Blanca and Cala’n Bosch. All of these places are lovely small villages with very beautiful beaches. I have lived in Cala’n Bosch for 4 months.

There is a bus number 65 between Cala’n Bosch and Ciutadella in every half an hour. A bus ticket costs less than two euros and must be purchased in a small kiosk in Ciutadella before getting on the bus. When starting your trip from other bus stops then the ticket can be bought from the bus driver. This bus drives on the route Ciutadella-Sa Caleta-Cala’n Bosch and Son Xoriguer. When you want to leave the bus you must press the stop button, otherwise it won’t stop. Cala’n Bosch has its own small harbor, with numerous bars and restaurants around it.

Ciutadellas ei ole randa. Kõige lähimad rannad on umbes 3 kilomeetri kaugusel Cala Santandria ja Sa Caleta. Veidi kaugemal on Cala’n Blanes, Cala’n Forcat, Cala Blanca ja Cala’n Bosch. Kõik need kohad on armsad väikesed külakesed, väga ilusate randadega. Mina elasin neli kuud Cala’n Boschis.

Tulles teistes peatustes bussi peale saab pileti osta bussijuhilt. Buss sõidab marsruudil Ciutadella-Sa Caleta-Cala’n Bosch ja Son Xoriguer. Bussist väljumisel tuleb anda märku vajutades stop nupule, muidu peatust ei toimu. Cala’n Boschis on oma väikene sadam, mille ümber on mitmeid baare ja restorane. IMG-20140812-WA0002DSC08253DSC08808DSC08841DSC08866For those who like sunset over the sea Cala’n Bosch is just the right place for you to enjoy them!

Heading along the cliffs and next to the sea from Cala’n Bosch, passing through Son Xoriguera you will reach to Cova dels Pardals, one of the many natural caves in Menorca. The cave is quite unknown to tourists, so it may happen that you will be all alone there or with few local people. There is very beautiful, it is possible to swim there or just enjoy the peace. Sometimes the locals arrange parties there at nights. The cave is lit up by dozen candles, which is the only light source in the dark. Even the way to the cave at night will be very dark, you can hit your toes by the thousands of stones on the road. The way to the cave offers wonderful views.

Kellele meeldivad päikeseloojangud mere kohal, siis Cala’n Bosch on just õige koht nende nautimiseks!

Cala’n Boschist mööda kaljusid ja mere äärt jalutades, Son Xoriguerist möödudes, jõuab ühe loodusliku koopa juurde, Cova dels Pardals. Koobas on turistidele tundmatu, seega võib juhtuda, et olete seal päris üksinda või mõne üksiku kohalikuga. Seal on väga ilus, võimalik ujuda, nautida rahu.. Mõnikord korraldavad kohalikud seal õhtul ka pidusid. Koopas süüdatakse mitukümmend küünalt, mis on ainsateks valgusallikateks pimedas. Isegi koopa juurde minek on kottpime ja mööda väga kivist teed, kus võib varbad siniseks lüüa 😀 Koopa juurde minnes avalduvad vaated on muidugi rohkem kui suurepärased.DSCN6025DSC08201IMG_6844IMG_6982IMG_6995IMG_8346IMG_8643DSC08194IMG_8261IMG_6885IMG_8624There is still operating fishing port in Fornells. Fornells is the island’s main water sport centre.  It is an important industrial town for shoes and furniture.

Fornellsi linnas asub siiani tegutsev kalasadam. Fornells on saare põhiline veespordi keskus. See on ka oluline töötstuslinn, eriti jalanõude ja mööbli tootmises.DSC08536.JPGIMG-20140910-WA0003In the middle of the island there is a city of Es Mercadal. The driveway offers a beautiful view to the city. The whole city is full of white houses.

Saare keskel asub Es Mercadali linn. Sõiduteelt avaneb linnale ilus vaade. Terve linn on valgeid maju täis.DSC08653There are many beautiul beaches with blue water in Menorca. In the summer season, many beaches are too crowded and there is no parking spaces. On the roundabouts there are screens with the number of free parking places of the most popular beaches. It is a great idea, because the roads to the beaches are very narrow and double-sided traffic is almost impossible.

Menorcal leiab palju ilusaid helesinise veega randu. Suve hooajal on paljud rannad puupüsti rahvast täis ja parkmiskohtade puudus. Suuremate ringteede juures on üleval tablood kus on kirjas, mitu vaba kohta populaarsemate randade juures on. See on hea sellepärast, et paljude randade juurde viivad väga väga kitsad teed ning kahepoolne liiklus on pea võimatu.

Cala en Turqueta rand on tõeline looduslik aare. Ranna nimi osutab selle türkiissinisele veele. See rand on saare üks kõige ilusamaid randu.DSC09161DSC09160.JPGSon Bou is the largest beach of the island. Is is a beach open out to the sea with fine sand.

Son Bou on kõige suurem rand Menorcal. Erinevalt teistest saare randadest ei asu see lahesopis, vaid selle rannajoon ulatub 2500 meetri kaugusele. DSC08717DSC08716DSC08718DSC08730Cala Rafalet. For visiting this beach you need to take a long walk through the fairy tale forest.

Ning muidugi Cala Galdana, Cala Morell, Cala’n Brut ja paljud teised suurepärased rannad. The zoo itself is very small, but it is special because most of the animals are not kept in the cage. My favorite was the lemurs’ home. The lemurs run around freely inside their garden.

Minu lemmikuks oli leemurite kodu, kus leemurid jooksevad oma aias vabalt ring.DSC07616IMG-20140728-WA0003DSC07518.JPGMenorca has its own traditional drink – Menorca Xoriguer Gin.

Menorcal on oma traditsiooniline jook – Menorca Xorigueri Gin. IMG-20140723-WA0000Annually on the 23rd and 24th of June, Ciutadella hosts one of the most spectacular festivities in the country – the fiestas of San Juan, the towns Patron Saint’s festival. It is the festivity where the horse becomes the star of the film, emulating the same tradition that was established in the Middle Ages.

Iga aasta 23-24. juunil toimub Menorcal suur pidu – San Juani tähistamine. Terve linn on inimesi ja hobuseid täis. Kohalikud avavad oma isiklike kodude uksed, mida võib vaatma minna.

Menorca has its own traditional shoes. Those are handmade leather sandals. Local people wear them, whenever possible, young and old, men and women, at work, home, party, just everyone and everywhere. It is possible to find them with all the possible decorations, colors, sparkling one, with high heel and without.

Menorcal on oma traditsioonilised jalanõud. Tegu on käsitsi valmistatud nahksete sandaalidega.

There is really cool bar/club in Cala’n Porter called Cova d’en Xoroi. It is bar during the day and nightclub at night. It is on the side of a steep cliff with wonderful views of the Mediterranean sea. There are several indoor and outside bars. There is live music in most of the evenings from 11 o’clock. You can see more photos here.

Seal on mitmeid sise- ja välibaare. Enamustel õhtutel kell 11 on võimalik kuulda ka elavat muusikat. Rohkem pilte näeb siin.IMG_20141231_151508.jpg
