Lapland / Lapimaa

Lapland is probably the most mysterious and unique place in Finland and in the world as well. What makes it so mysterious is a polar night and day and the Aurora Borealis/northern lights. There is also a Santa Claus village in Lapland. There are 24 hours of sunshine in the summer and in winter time the Aurora Borealis is highly visible in the sky. My trip was at the end of November/early December, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to see the northern lights. It was one of my biggest dreams to see northern lights when traveling to Lapland.

IMG_3420Lapland is located in the north of Finland, it has a border with Russia, Sweden and Norway. There lives the one and only Santa Claus with his little helpers – elves. The Santa Claus Village is located in Rovaniemi and it is free to visit. A short video clip and pictures will be made of every visit with Santa Claus. These can be bought afterward the visit. The popular activities of Lapland include sledding tour with reindeers or huskys, there are also many ski resorts.

It is possible to go to Lapland from Helsinki by car, bus, train and plane. The bus ride takes about 12 hours, train ride 8 hours, and it takes around 1.5 hours by plane. The earlier you book your tickets the cheaper they will be. There is a Onnibus bus company in Finland, with that it is possible to get very cheap bus tickets to Lapland. Finnish people are very kind. We had to change our bus to another one in one city. The bus with what we came from Helsinki was a bit late. We told that to our bus driver who contacted to his colleague, the next bus driver to say that two passengers will be late, and asked him to wait for us. And the second bus waited for us!:)

Lapimaale saab Helsingist sõita auto, bussi, rongi ja lennukiga. Bussisõit võtab aega umbes 12, rongisõit 8 tundi, ning lennukiga jõuab Rovaniemisse 1,5 tunniga. Mida rohkem aega piletid ette broneerida, seda odavamalt saab. Seda nii bussi, rongi või lennukiga minnes. Soomes sõidab Onnibus, millega võib saada väga odavad bussipiletid Lapimaale. Mis on soomlaste puhul armas on see, et me pidime ühes linnas ümber istuma teisele bussile. See buss millega Helsingis reisi alustasime jäi hiljaks. 🙂 IMG_3302

I suggest to visit Santa Claus village in the dark. It is incredible with the Christmas lights in the dark. Santa Claus Village is opened every day throughout the year. There is the Arctic Circle in the Santa Claus Village, so it is possible to cross the Arctic circle. The Arctic Circle is located at latitudes 66 ° 33’38 “. There are polar days and nights on the norther polar region. There are restaurants, shops, sledding tours with reindeers, huskys, and a Santa Claus post Office at the Santa Claus Village. All the letters sent from the Santa Claus village will get special stamp – sent from the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi. A popular accommodation opportunity is the glass igloo. It seems so cool to sleep in the igloo made by glass, under the stars and Northern Lights.

Jõuluvanakülasse soovitan minna pimedas. See on tuledes lihtsalt niiiiiiii ilus!!! Avatud on see iga päevaselt aastaringselt. Jõuluvanakülas asub ka polaarjoon seega saab seal üle polaarjoone hüpata. Põhjapolaarjoon asub laiuskraadidel 66°33’38”. Põhjapolaarjoonelt põhja poole esineb polaaröö ja polaarpäev. Tegevusi leiab seal kõigile! Lisaks jõuluvana külastusele on seal restoranid, poed, saanisõidud haskide ja põhjapõtradega, jõuluvana postkontor. Postkontorist saadetud kirjadele pannakse tempel – Rovaniemi polaarjoonelt saadetud kiri. Populaarne majutusasutus on klaasist iglu. See tundub nii äge, magada klaasist katusega iglus virmaliste all.. IMG_3351IMG_3533IMG_3458IMG_3514IMG_3523IMG_3528IMG_3529IMG_3512IMG_3511IMG_3480IMG_3409IMG_3404IMG_3370IMG_3373IMG_3383IMG_3388IMG_3361IMG_3354IMG_3424IMG_3439IMG_3444Lapland has its own traditional breadrieska. Bread is baked from unleavened dough.

Lapimaal on oma traditsiooniline lapi leib ehk rieska. Leib küpsetatakse kergitamata taignast. IMG_3308The second traditional Lapland dish is a reindeer meat. The reindeer meat is actually very healthy because it doesn’t contain fat. It was very weird for me to eat it. First you are petting the animal and later you just eat them. I swallowed pretty much the meat without chewing it, drank a lot of juice and eat lapland bread, so I am not the right person to comment the taste of it 😀

Teine traditsiooniline Lapimaa söök on põhjapõdra liha. Mina neelasin liha läbinärimata alla, sõin palju lapi leiba ja jõin palju morssi peale, seega ma ei oska selle maitset kommenteerida 😀IMG_3729IMG_3714IMG_3551IMG-20161202-WA0049There is a much less daylight in the winter in Lapland. It starts to lighten up about 11 o’clock in the morning and 15.47 it is completely dark already. I think that there is always so dark, even on the midday it is so dark. The temperature is often below 30 degrees in winters, so take your warmest clothes with you.

Lapimaal on talvel valget aega väga vähe. Valgemaks hakkab minema umbes kella 11 ajal hommikul ning 15.47 on juba kottpime. Minu meelest sellist valget aega seal talvel polegi, koguaeg on hämar. Kaasa tuleb võtta soojad riided, sest talvine temperatuur langeb tihti alla -30°.

IMG-20161204-WA0046IMG_3733IMG_3342IMG_3318There is a rumor that every Laplanders have their own reindeer. Actually this is not true. There are approximately 10 000 Laplanders in Northern Europe, but actually only 10% of them are involved in reindeer raising. It means that they can be related to it thanks to their families. For example their spouse has her/his own reindeer, just because of that they are also a owner of the reindeer. It is very rude to ask from the Laplander how many reindeers do he have. This question can be compared with the question ’how much money do you have on your bank account’. There is a joke in Lapland: „If the tax administration asks you how many reindeers do you have, say none. If friends ask, say enough. And if the tourists ask say that all of them are yours“. Reindeers walk around completely freely in Lapland. If the reindeer is hit by a car and killed, its owner is compensated by the government for their loss of potential profits.

During the trip I stayed at the country house that belongs a friends of my friend. The house is located about 150 km from Rovaniemi, on the real Lapland.

Reisi ajal ööbisin sõbranna tuttavate juures maamajas, umbes 150 km kaugusel Rovaniemi linnast. Päris ehtsal LapimaalIMG_3783IMG_3770The house were we stayed is close to Ruka Ski Resort so we also visited this ski resort. We didn’t go skiing there this time. There were so many people and there seemed to be a fun vibe.

Suusatamas ega kelgutamas me ise seal sel korral ei käinud. Selles suusakülakeses tundus olevat melu suur ja inimesi palju.IMG_3828IMG_3829IMG_3842There is a lot of snow during the winter in Lapland.

Talviti on Lapimaal lund palju! IMG_3599IMG_3590IMG_3633
