Malta

The Republic of Malta is the world’s tenth smallest and fifth most densely-populated country. Its capital, Valletta, is the smallest national capital in the European Union. Malta is an island country in the Mediterranean and consists of seven islands – Malta, Gozo, Comino and four uninhabited islands. Malta has an area of 316 km². Malta is located on the south of Italy, east of Tunisia and north of Libya. Malta has a population of about 434,403 people.

Malta riigi pindala on 316 km². Malta asub Itaaliale kuuluvast saarest Sitsiiliast lõunas ja Tuneesiast idas. Malta riigi rahvaarv on umbes 434 403 inimest.

yjzi0342The Maltese islands have a beautiful coastline with rocky and sandy beaches.

ogeh9922obxa6479hwiy8537mvbc1225Malta is one of the driest countries on the planet. With no sizeable freshwater lakes or streams, almost the absolute entirely of this figure to found below ground in aquifers – layers of permeable rocks that can absorb water.  [https://lovinmalta.com/news/maltas-water-crisis-is-brewing] I am surprised that the bottled water in Malta was so cheap. It was possible to get 2 liters of water with just 0.65€.

Suure kahe liitrise pudelivee võis saada vaid 65 euro sendi eest.

Malta has a Mediterranean climate. The annual average temperature is +18.6°C. This makes it a perfect travel destination for us throughout the year. We visited Malta in the middle of December and got both really warm weather for shorts and very windy and bit chilly weather. Malta has mild winters and hot summers. It mostly rains in autumn and winter. Summers are generally dry.

Maltal valitseb lähistroopiline vahemereline kliima, aasta keskmiseks temperatuuriks on +18,6°C. Malta on seega meie jaoks heaks reisisihtkohaks aastaläbi.

pelq6566img_2300Malta became independent on 21 September 1964. Under its constitution Malta initially retained Queen Elizabeth II as Queen of Malta. In 1974 Malta became a republic with the Commonwealth, with the President as head of state. In 1979 Malta declared itself as a neutral and non-aligned state [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malta]. This may be the reason why there is a left side traffic in Malta. Streets of Malta are very narrow with signs “Speed kills”. There are quite huge traffic jams too. Even in winter time, when there are no touristic season the island is full of cars and traffic jams. Driving is not easy there for people who are used to drive on the right side of the road. We rented a car from the airport because we planned to visit different parts of the island. I have heard that Malta has a well-developed public transportation also and you can travel to almost everywhere by bus. One-time bus ticket is valid for two hours and costs 2€. It is also possible to buy day and week tickets. There are different colors parking lines on the ground. White color indicates a public parking space. It is forbidden to park next to the yellow colors. Yellow color usually refers to the entrance of the garages or unloading point for deliveries. The green color is only for the residents. The blue color marks the parking for residents but only from 18.00 to 08.00.

Malta saavutas oma iseseivuse Suurbritannia võimu alt 1964. aastal, kuid riigipeaks jäi edasi Briti kuninganna Elizabeth II. Malta Vabariik kuulutati välja 1974. aastal, 1979. aastal kuulutas Malta end neutraalseks. Ilmselt ka sellest ajast on jäänud Maltale vasakpoolne liiklus. Malta tänavad on väga kitsad, “kaunistatud” siltidega Speed kills – kiirus tapab ning on tohutud ummikud. Isegi talvisel ajal on saar täidetud ummikutega. Seega pole autojuhtimine seal kerge. Meie rentisime kohe lennujaamast auto, kuna oli plaanis saare erinevaid osasid külastada. Maltal on hästi arenenud ühistransport, millega saab sõita peaaegu igasse saare punkti. Ühekordne pilet kehtib 2 tundi ja maksab 2 eurot. Võimalik on osta ka päeva- ja nädalapileteid. Maltal tuleb tähele panna parkimiseks maha joonistatud parkimisjoonte värvi. Valge värv tähistab avalikku parkimiskohta. Kollase värvi kõrvale on keelatud parkida, kuna see tähistab tavaliselt garaažide sissepääsu või kaubaautode kauba pealelaadimise kohta. Roheline värv on mõeldud ainult Malta elanikele. Sinine värv tähistab Malta elanikele parkimist, kuid seda ainult kell 18.00-08.00.

vmoz8530img_2114Our trip started from Sliema, Tas-Sliema in Maltese. Sliema is known for its restaurants and cafes. Sliema has a just over two kilometers long seaside promenade for taking a nice walk or enjoying the morning run. Sliema town also includes Manoel Island which is located in the middle of Marsamxett Harbor. The island is connected to the mainland via a small stone bridge. The harbor is the main stopping place for yachts. The most famous sight on the island is the Kinghts’ of Malta 18th century star-shaped Fort Manoel. It has been featured as a filming location on TV series Game of Thrones. Unfortunately it is not possible to go inside to this fortress. There are no sandy beaches in Sliema but the coastline is full of Roman baths.

Saar on ühendatud maismaaga väikese kivist sillaga. Sadam on põhiliseks peatuspaigaks jahtidele. Kõige kuulsam vaatamisväärsus saarel on muidugi 18. sajandil Malta rüütlite loodud tähekujuline Manoeli kindlus, mis on ka üks telesarja “Troonide mäng” võttekohti. Kahjuks pole võimalik kindluse alale sisse minna.

It is possible to go from Sliema to the capital city of Malta Valletta by ferry. Marsamxetto Ferry Service has two ships in an hour between those two cities. The roundtrip takes about half an hour by boat and costs less than 3€.

Edasi-tagasi suuna hind peaks jääma alla kolme euro. Laevasõit võtab aega umbes pool tundi.

The capital city of Malta is Valletta which is the southernmost capital in Europe. The most photographed place in Valletta is the corner between the streets St Lucy and St Paul, right outside of the San Paolo Naufrago wine bar. There are many beautiful, narrow streets in Valletta. Valletta city center belongs to a list of UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. On the city center, close to the Triton Fountain and bus terminal are several parking lots and parking garage. You can leave your car there and walk around in the city. Valletta is quite small so it is possible to walk everywhere. Leaving your car there for 2-3 hours costs 4€. The city center is about 10-15 minutes walking distance from there.

Saare pealinn Valletta on Euroopa kõige lõunapoolsem pealinn. Valletta kõige enim pildistatud koht on St Lucy ja St Pauli tänavate kokkupuute nurk, täpselt San Paolo Naufrago veinibaari juures. Vallettas on palju ilusaid, kitsaid tänavaid. Valletta kesklinn kuulub aastast 1980 UNESCO maailmapärandi nimistusse. 2-3 tunni pilet maksab 4 eurot. Parkimismajast asub kesklinn umbes 10-5 minutilise jalutuskäigu kaugusel.

Windows, doors, benches, ships – all these are in such beautiful colors in Malta. All the buildings on the islands are beige/light brown, but the colorful details make the view so pretty.

gdpn0726vjfx3350xhyj5180jnyi4505Marsaxlokk Fishing Village is a little village which symbol is colorful fishermen’ luzzu boats and the market in every Sunday. You can see fishermen doing their daily activities there in the morning. In the evening the Marsaxlok promenade becomes a truly flattering and very popular dinner spot. Despite the many Mediterranean and fresh fish offering restaurants, it is difficult to find a place to eat without a reservations during the warmer season.

The village of Popeye is located in Anchor Bay and consists of nineteen wooden buildings. Now there is a theme park and an open-air museum that is open throughout the year. To get this amazing view over the village and Anchor Bay just turn left at the entrance and walk for 100 meters. We went there only to see this view and didn’t visit the village itself. Guest can also enjoy boat tours, wine cellar and water activities there. On bigger holidays such are Christmas, Easter and Halloween for example, there are special events in the park. During the winter season the ticket for adult costs 11€ and for children 9€. During the summer season the tickets are 15€ and 12€.

jvje2979fxxf3119img_2196img_2248Maltese cuisine has been influenced by its neighbor countries Italy, Tunisia and Libya. The food portions are large there, and don’t leave you enough space for dessert. There are many pizza restaurants on the island where pizza is cooked according to the classic recipes. But you can also find pizzas with eggs and sausages. Maltese traditional dish is rabbit stew. There are many local pastizzerias in Malta where you can buy various pastries and pies. The most traditional pastries are pies from extra thin Vienna dough what are traditionally filled with ricotta cheese and smashed green peas.

Malta traditsioonilisemaid roogi on küülikuhautis. Maltal leidub mitmeid kohalikke pastizzeriasid, kus saab osta erinevaid küpsetisi ja pirukaid. Kõige traditsioonilisemad on pastizzid ehk õhkõrnast lehttainast pirukad, mis on traditsiooniliselt täidetud kas ricotta juustu või purustatud roheliste hernestega.

img_1660img_1843Our favorite breakfast spot was Dolce Sicilia café in Sliema, where you will find delicious pastries both salty and sweet. Different coffees are also good and the staff is very nice and friendly.

img_1938img_1396img_1428img_1405img_1403Our favorite restaurant was Da Ciccio cucina in Mellieha. We ended up there because we got a 20% discount coupon from our hotel and because the restaurant was located right next to our hotel. We looked the menu online and found dishes we would like to eat before going to the restaurant. When we arrived to the restaurant warm and friendly welcome awaited us. The menu includes seafood, pizza, pasta, different meat dishes.. Our waiter warned us that the dishes in their restaurant has large portions. We decided to try traditional Malta dishes since it was out last night in Malta and hadn’t tried anything local yet. First they brought marinated olives and bread to our table. Those olives were so good! We took the appetizer for two – traditional Maltan plate. It included six different bowls of food – olives, local sausage, sun blushed tomatoes, capers, broad bean dip, crispy thin rosemary baked dough and olive oil. All this was super tasty. The portion for two costs 15€. After finishing our food we were already so full and didn’t have enough space for the main dish. We still decided to try one of their desserts too and we chose hot cinnamon rolls with a warm cream cheese coating. The portions contained two cinnamon rolls. I thought that these rolls are as small as the spring rolls but actually they were huge 😀 After seeing our faces the waiter said “ I told you our portions are big” 😀 I highly recommend this restaurant, the dishes are very tasty, portions are big, prices were quite cheap and the staff very professional and friendly.

Lemmik restoraniks on Da Ciccio cucina Melliehas. Kuna me sõime seal meie viimasel õhtul Maltal, otsustasime proovida kõige pealt eelroogadest Malta traditsioonilisi toite.

img_2162img_2143Our trip lasted only 3,5 days and we missed many places due to lack of time. I would have liked to visit town Mdina and islands Comino and Gozo. Mdina is a medieval town with stone wall, former capital of Malta, what is built on the highest hill of the island. The nickname of the city is the quiet city or the silent city. This nickname comes from the calm and quiet atmosphere. There is the main Malta’s cathedral dedicated to Saint Paul. Locals say that the big amount of people want to have their wedding in this cathedral. So, on January 1, all those people who want to get married there has to wait on the live queue to sign up for the wedding time. It is possible to sign up only once in a year.

Samuti avaneb sealt vaade tervele saarele. Laulatuse aega saab registreerida ainult üks kord aastas, 1. jaanuaril.

waje9504The island of Comino is a rocky almost uninhabited island of 3,5 square kilometers. The famous blue lagoon is located on this island. The blue lagoon with its crystal clear and transparent water and magnificent views over Malta and Gozo make the island a really popular tourist destination.

Comino saar, mis on 3,5 ruutkilomeetri suurune kivine peaaegu asutamata saar. Peaaegu sellepärast, et seal siiski elab üks perekond. Comino saarel asub kuulus helesinine laguun.

fbsy8338The island of Gozo is about 25-minutes ferry ride from the Malta’s main island. On the island of Gozo it feels as the time has stopped. People live there more traditional and simpler life than on the main island of Malta. The island of Gozo is popular holiday place amongst local people. The island of Gozo is known for its limestone arch, also called the Azure window which was unfortunately collapsed in stormy weather in 2017. The Azure window is one filming location for the Dothraki wedding scene in the first season of Game of Thrones.

Malta peasaarelt umbes 25 minutilise praamisõidu kaugusel asub Gozo saar.

levz1133Malta is a good place to visit for tourists because most of the people speak good English there. The official languages in Malta are Maltese and English. Maltese is the only Semitic language in the European Union. Lately there have been so many good offers with Ryanair and it is possible to get return direct flights from Tallinn and Riga with just 20-30 euros. There is a tourist tax for 0,50 cents per day.

Maltat on turistidel hea külastada, kuna inimesed räägivad seal ikka valdavalt inglise keelt. Maltal on turismimaks 0,50€ päevas.

The nature in Malta is really beautiful.

Malta loodus on väga ilus.

uule2386rctf2401yfnj6155uhwp7043scro5693dqea7156img_1371img_2291Even the clock is upside down in Malta 😀

Lisaks liiklusele on ka kell tagurpidi 😀
