Riga’s historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, noted for its Art Nouveau/Jugendstil architecture. The buildings in the centre are soooo pretty. And these colors.. reminds me a bit of Nothing Hill neighborhood in London. The best streets where to see these Art Nouveau style buildings are Alberta iela, Strelnieku iela, Antonijas iela and Elizabetes iela.

Riia ajalooline keskus on tänu oma juugendstiilis arhitektuurile kantud UNESCO maailmapärandi nimistusse. Need juugendstiilis majad on nii ilusad. Kõik need värvid.. meenutab mulle natukene Nothing Hilli linnaosa Londonis. Parimad tänavad arhitektuuri nautimiseks on Alberta iela, Strelnieku iela, Antonijas iela ja Elizabetes iela.

The buildings in Riga Old Town are also soooo pretty. Actually the whole old town is so nice, like from a fairytale, and crowded in summer season. I visited Riga one Saturday in June and there were so many tourists in town, even hard to walk around. Just people everywhere. Even though it was during the most important festival for Latvians which they prefer spending at the countryside the city was still too crowded.

Riia vanalinnas olevad hooned on samuti nii ilusad. Tegelikult on kogu vanalinn ilus, muinasjutuline, ja natuke liiga ülerahvastatud suvel. Mina juhtusin Riiat külastama ühel juuni kuu laupäeval ja terve linn oli turistidest pungil. Mul oli isegi raske ringi kõndida, sest lihtsalt kuhugi polnud astuda. Inimesed olid igal pool. Kuigi ma olin linnas lätlaste jaoks ühe kõige tähtsama püha, jaanipäeva, ajal, mida enamus inimesi eelistab maapiirkonnas tähistada, oli linn sellest hoolimata rahvast täis.

Doesn’t the previous photo look like exactly from the fairytale?

In old town there is a famous Riga’s sightseeing – the Three Brothers on Maza Pils street. The Three Brothers is a building complex and it is actually almost impossible to photograph these building, but pretty nonetheless. The houses are from the oldest complex of dwelling houses in Riga. The white house is from the 15th century, the yellow one from 16th and the green one from the 17th century.

Vanalinnas on kuulus vaatamisväärsus – Kolm venda, mis asub Maza Pils tänaval. Kolm venda on majade kompleks ning neid on peaaegu võimatu pildistada, kuid sellest hoolimata on nad ilusad. Koos moodustavad hooned vanima elumajakompleksi Riias. Valge maja on pärit 15., kollane maja 16. ja roheline maja 17. sajandist.

The view from Kramu street to Restuarant 1221 on Jauniela in old town is also a popular photography point for locals and touists alike. The colorful buldings are really photoghenic.

Kramu tänavalt avanev vaade Restoran 1221-le, Jauniela tänaval, on vanalinna üks populaarsemaid pildistamiskohti nii kohalike kui turistide hulgas. Need värvilised hooned on tõeliselt fotogeenilised.

The most beautiful view of Riga you can get from St Peter’s Church tower. St Peter’s Church is one of the most visited places in Riga. It is a Lutheran church, dedicated to Saint Peter and the first mention of it is in records dating to 1209. The ticket to the tower viewng platform costs 9€. It was probably one the most expensive thing I did in Riga during this trip but it was totally worth it! If most of the cities you have to climb endless stairs to get to the tower then in Riga you just have to climb three floors and then the elevator takes you with seconds to the top of the tower. The bird’s-eye look from there is so pretty. It is really windy up there. I only  visited the tower and not the church itself. The tower is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00-18.00 and on Sundays at 12.00-18.00. It is closed on Mondays. The entrance fee is as I said 9€ for adults and 3€ or 7€ for the students.

Kõige ilusamat panoraamvaadet Riiale saab nautida Püha Peetri kirikutornist. Püha Peetri kirik on üks kõige enam külastatumaid kohti Riias. Tegemist on luteriusu kirikuga, mis on pühendatud Püha Peetrile ja esimest korda mainitud juba aastal 1209. Pilet torni vaateplatvormile maksab 9€. Torni tipust avanev linnuvaade linnale on niii ilus.

Riga has many beautiful parks. You can start exploring them with walking alongside the Riga Canal that separates Old town from the rest of the city.

Riias on ka mitmeid ilusaid parke. Parkide avastamist võid alustada jalutades mööda Riia Kanalit, mis eraldab vanalinna ülejäänud linnast.

The Freedom Monument is honoring soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence (1918-1920). It is considered an important symbol of the freedom, independence and sovereignty of Latvia.

Right there you will also find the Laima Clock. Laima is the largest producer of confectionery in Latvia. Laima is the goddess of fate in Latvian mythology. The Laima Clock is a landmark in Riga which is located between the Old Town and the centre. The clock was completed in 1924.

Kohe Vabadusesamba juures on Laima kell. Laima on Läti suurim kondiitritoodete tootja. Laima on Läti mütoloogias saatuse jumalanna. Kell on ehitatud 1924. aastal.

Only a small part of Riga’s old city walls remains today and it can be found at the Swedish Gate. The Swedish Gate was erected 1698 as a part of the Riga Wall to provide access to barracks outside the city wall.

Ainult väike osa Riia linnamüürist on tänapäeval säilinud. Selle väikese osa võib leida Rootsi väravast. Rootsi värav ehitati 1698. aastal võimaldamaks ligipääsu kasarmudele väljaspool linnamüüri.

Riga has so many cute cafes. Unfortunately I did not have enough time to check out all of them, just few of them. But it is better than nothing, right? My favorite one was Parunasim Kafe’teeka. This is Old Town’s hidden treasure and by hidden I mean – literally. It is located in a small courtyard and not just any but a church courtyard! Actually it is located right next to one of city’s main attractions – the three Brothers, but it will still make you feel miles away from the crowds of tourists. It has also claimed to be the most romantic cafe in the historic city. They have really tasty cakes there. There was no actual menu or drink list, so you just have to explane to the waitress what you would like to have. They have summer terrace also outside, but no sun on the terrace.

Riias on mitmeid armsaid kohvikuid. Kahjuks mul polnud piisavalt aega, et neid  kõiki külastada. Minu lemmikuks sai Parunasim Kafe’teeka. Tegemist on vanalinna peidetud aardega. Ja ma tõesti mõtlen peidetud. Kohvik asub väikeses sisehoovis ja mitte mingis tavalises sisehoovis, vaid kiriku omas! Tegelikult asub kohvik ühe linna kõige kuulsama -Kolm venda – vaatamisväärsuse juures, kuid sellest hoolimata on kohvikus olles tunne, et oled kilomeetrite kaugusel turistidest. Kohvik nimetab ennast kõige romantilisemaks kohvikuks vanalinnas.

I really recommend visiting Big Bad Bagels. OMG the bagels there are so goooood!! There are so many different options + vegan options. The most popular one is Mexican-type bagel with bacon, guacamole, cheese and egg, but I tried the typical New York style bagel. They also offer different fresh drinks and smoothies. The drink prices are much cheaper compared to many other eating places in Riga. Bagels are around 5 euros. They have few seating places inside and outside. On weekends it is really crowded!

Ma soovitan külastada Big Bad Bagels‘it. OMG need bagelid on seal lihtsalt nii head. Valikus on mitmeid erinevaid bageleid, lisaks ka vegan variandid. Kõige populaarsem on Mehhiko stiilis bagel – peekoni, guacamole, juustu ja munaga. Mina proovisin tüüpilist New Yorgi stiilis bagelit. Nädalavahetustel on kohvik rahvast täis.

For breakfast I went to Palgams cafe. I decided to try there Vegan quinoa pancakes + freshly squeezed orange juice. This cafe is a bit pricier , the pancake was 8€ and fresh juice 4€. The location is nice, service is good and the place looks really nice, instagram-friendly interior also. They have many tables in the terrace too.
Hommikusöögiks ma läksin Pelgams kohvikusse. Ma otsustasin proovida nende vegan quinoa pannkooke ja värskelt pressitud apelsini mahla. See kohvik on pisut kallim, pannkook maksis 8€ ja värskelt pressitud mahl 4€. Asukoht on ilus, teenindus hea ja koht ise ka ilus, instagrami piltide jaoks, haha. Neil on ka suur terrass.

I have heard a lot of good of these places too – Al Cappuchino, Vest Cafe, Miit, Cafe Leningrad, Aspara Tea house. If you want to try traditional Latvian dishes then head to Lido. There are big variety of different traditional Latvian dishes and you can see all the dishes and choose which ones do you like the most.

It is possible to visit Riga by plane, train or bus. Depends on where you are traveling from. Riga is served by Riga International Airport which is the largest and busiest airport in the Baltic states. The airport is about 11 km from the city center, but the bus and train stations are both in the city center, close to the old town. It is really easy to go to the city center from the airport by bus and you can do it with the normal public transportation ticket, no extra fee for that as in many other cities.

I happened to visit the city during the Midsummer day celebrations which is the most beloved one in Latvia. Midsummer festival – Ligo-Jani is held at night from 23rd to 24th of June – the shortest night and longest day of the year. People prefer to celebrate this festival in the countryside. People were walking around in Riga wearing big circle wreaths made by flowers or leaves. I also saw cars and buildings decorated with oak wreaths.

Mina juhtusin linna külastama jaanipäeva pidustuste aegu. Jaanipäev on lätlaste kõige armastatum püha. Jaanipäeva tähistatakse ööl vastu 24ndat Juunit, mil on aasta kõige lühem öö ja kõige pikem päev. Inimesed eelistavad jaanipäeva tähistada maapiirkondades. Juba 22. juunil kõndisid inimesed Riias ringi kandes suuri lilledest ja puulehtedest valmistatud pärgi. Ka autod ja majad kaunistatakse tammepärjadega.

IMG_0625IMG_0848

I always like to see the street art too in the cities I visit, but in the center of Riga I only saw one.

Uusi linnu külastades mulle meeldib tutvuda ka tänavakunstiga. Kahjuks leidsin Riia kesklinnast vaid ühe pildi.
