Helsinki / Helsingi

I have mixed feelings about Helsinki. I have heard how many people like Helsinki a lot, but for me it’s kind of boring, uninteresting place, not much to do there. Maybe I just haven’t discovered that “something” for myself yet. There are some great places to visit and see, but overall it is not as nice as its neighbor cities.

Mul on üpris kahetised tunded Helsingi puhul. Ma olen palju kuulnud inimesi ütlemas kui väga neile Helsingi meeldib. Minu jaoks on tegemist veidi igava, ebahuvitava linnaga, kus pole väga palju vaadata. Võib-olla ma lihtsalt ei ole “seda miskit” enda jaoks veel avastanud. Helsingis leidub küll mitmeid vaatamisväärsusi, kuid üldiselt on see palju igavam koht kui tema naaber pealinnad.

Helsinki is the capital and most populous city of Finland. It is situated on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. The area of the city is 715,48 km2 and there lives around 650,058 inhabitants, together with the urban area the population is 1,268,296 inhabitants. Helsinki has one of the highest urban standards of living in the world.

Helsingi on Soome pealinn ja samuti selle kõige rahvarohkem linn. Helsingi asub Soome lahe kaldal. Linna pindala on 715,48 km2 ja seal elab umbes 650,058 inimest. Koos Helsingi eeslinnadega on rahvaarvuks umbes 1,2 miljonit elanikku. Helsingi on kogu maailmas üks kõige kõrgema elatustasemega linnu.

Processed with VSCO with f2 presetHelsinki is located 80 kilometers north of Tallinn, Estonia. It is possible to go there by boat or plane from Tallinn. It takes about 2 hours by ferry and 30 minutes by plane. Helsinki is popular day trip destination among the tourists in Tallinn. The day trip ship tickets cost around 30€, the earlier you book the cheaper they will be.

Helsinki International airport is located in Vantaa which is about thirty minutes from the city center. It is really easy to reach the city center by train. The trains leave from Helsinki Central Railway Station and run every 10 minutes in the daytime. The tickets can most easily be bought from HSL ticket machine or app.

Helsingi asub Tallinnast 80 kilomeetrit põhja pool. Tallinnast pääseb Helsingisse laeva ja lenukiga. Laevasõit võtab aega umbes kaks tundi ja lennukiga 30 minutit. Helsingi on Tallinnat külastavate turistide hulgas populaarseks päevareisi sihtkohtaks. Päevareisi laevapiletid maksavad umbes 30€. Mida varem broneerid, seda odavamad piletid on.

Helsingi Rahvusvaheline lennujaam asub Vantaas, mis on kesklinnast umbes 30 minuti kaugusel. Lennujaamast pääseb kiirelt ja lihtsalt kesklinna rongiga. Rongid käivad päevasel ajal iga 10 minuti tagant Helsingi Keskraudteejaamast. Kõige paremini saab pileteid osta HSL-i piletimasinatest või nende mobiilirakendusest.

IMG_20160607_170510Helsinki have three main harbors where the ferries from Tallinn are going – West Harbor Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 and Katajanokka. Katajanokka is located in the city center. West harbor is about 45 minutes from the city center on foot and 25 minutes by tram number 7 which leaves right in front of the Terminal 1 and 2.

Helsingis on kolm põhilist sadamat, kuhu Tallinnast tulevad laevad suunduvad – Läänesadam Terminal 1 ja 2 ning Katajanokka sadam. Katajanokka terminal asub kesklinnas. Läänesadamast saab kesklinna jala umbes 45 minutiga ja trammiga number 7 umbes 25 minutiga.

Processed with VSCO with f2 presetProbably the most photographed spot in Helsinki is the Senate Square together with the Helsinki Cathedral. The Senate Square and its surroundings are an example of Neoclassical architecture. The square is dominated by four buildings designed by Carl Ludvig Engel. These buildings are Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, the main building of the University of Helsinki and the National Library of Finland. The oldest stone building in Helsinki, the Sederholm House, is also on the southeast corner of the square.  In the middle of the square stands a statue of Alexander II which is one of the major tourist landmarks of the city and a reminder of Finland’s close relationship with Imperial Russia. The Helsinki Cathedral is the stage of national and academic festive services and one of the most popular tourist sights. The Cathedral is a Finnish Lutheran church and was completed in 1852. On the roof there are sculptures of the twelve apostles who guard the city. The stairs of the Cathedral are popular place for people to sit and hang out, specially for students.

Senati Väljak koos Helsingi toomkirikuga on ilmselt enim pildistatud koht nii Helsingis kui kogu Soomes. Senati Väljak koos seda ümbritsevate hoonetega on heaks näiteks uusklassitsitlikust arhitektuurist. Väljakul domineerivad neli Carl Ludvig Engeli poolt disainitud hoonet – Helsingi toomkirik, Riiginõukogu hoone, Helsingi Ülikooli peahoone ja Soome Rahvusraamatukogu. Senati väljaku kagunurgas asub ka Helsingi vanim kiviehitis – Sederholmi maja. Väljaku keskel on Aleksander II kuju, mis on üks linna peamisi vaatamisväärsusi ning meenutuseks Soome lähedastele suhetele Keiserliku Venemaaga. Helsingi toomkirik on riiklike ja akadeemiliste pidustuste keskmeks ning samuti üks Helsingi populaarsemaid turismiobjekte. Toomikirik on Soome Luterlik kirik ning see valmis aastal 1852. Kiriku katusel on kaheteistkümne linna valvava apostli skulptuurid. Kirikusse viivad trepid on populaarne kohtumis- ja ajaveetmiskoht, seda eriti noorte ja üliõpilaste hulgas.

Processed with VSCO with b5 presetProcessed with VSCO with b5 presetBGQS2805Processed with VSCO with f2 presetSKMC6193NGBB8379IMG_4751The second well-known sight is Uspenski Cathedral. The Cathedral welcomes people who come by ferry mainly from Sweden. The cathedral was completed in 1868. It is the largest orthodox church in Western Europe.  The church is one of the clearest symbols of the Russian impact on Finish history thanks to its golden cupolas and redbrick facade. Don’t forget to step inside, it is free of charge.

Teine tuntud vaatamisväärsus on Uspenski katedraal. Katedraal tervitab esimesena peamiselt Rootsist saabuvad külastajaid. Katedraal valmis aastal 1868. Tegemist on suurima õigeusu kirikuga Lääne-Euroopas. Antud kirik on tänu oma kuldstele kupilitele ja punastest tellistest fassaadile üks selgemaid sümboleid Venemaa mõjust Soome ajaloole. Kirikusse sissepääs on tasuta.

YDHP7243FVNE0551GNFV4817KONG7114One really nice and original church is Temppeliaukio Rock Church. As the name already says the church is excavated directly into a rock. The church was completed in 1969. The church hall is covered with a dome, lined with copper and supported on the rock walls by reinforced concrete beams. The interior walls are of rugged rock and rubble wall. The church has excellent acoustics and thanks to that it is a popular venue for concerts. The church looks really pretty and it is super photogenic. The ticket costs 3€. The visit is free of charge for Helsinki card owners and 0-17 years old children. See the opening hours here.

Üks tõeliselt ilus ja omapärane kirik on Temppeliaukio kaljukirik. Nagu nimigi juba ütleb on kirik kaevatud otse kalju sisse. Kirik valmis aastal 1969. Kiriku saal on kaetud kupliga, vooderdatud vasega ja toetatud raudbetoonist taladega. Kiriku siseseinad on tehtud tugevast kivist ja killustikust. Kirikul on suurepärane akustika ja tänu sellele on see populaarseks kontsertide toimumiskohaks. Kirik näeb tõesti ilus välja ja on super fotogeeniline. Sissepääs kirikusse maksab 3€. Helsingi kaardiomanikele ja kuni 17-aastased lapstele on külastus tasuta. Lahtiolekuaegadega saate tutvuda siin.

DFIF6623FJMD1960IMG_1544IMG_1568Helsinki has many architectural sights, one of them is Helsinki Central Station. It is used by approximately 200 000 passengers daily and this makes it Finland’s most-visited building. The Central Station was opened in 1919. The construction was already started in 1905. The station is covered with Finnish granite. It is also said that over 400 000 persons check the time when passing from the 48,5 meters high clock tower daily. Other features after clock tower are two pairs of statues the “Lantern carriers” holding lamps on both sides of the main entrance.

Helsingis on mitmeid arhitektuurilisi vaatamisväärsusi. Üks neist on Helsingi keskraudteejaam. Raudteejaama kasutab päevas umbes 200 000 reisijat, mis teeb sellest Soome kõige külastatavama hoone. Keskjaam avati 1919. aastal. Ehitust ise alustati juba 1905. aastal. Jaamahoone on kaetud Soome graniidiga. Räägitakse, et üle 400 000 inimese vaatab kella 48,5 meetri kõrgusel asuvast kellatornist sellest möödudes. Peasissepääsu ehivad kaks paari kujusid – Laternakandjad – mis hoiavad lampe mõlemal pool peasissekäiku.

Here are some examples of Helsinki’s pretty architecture.

Järgnevalt mõned näited Helsingi ilusast arhitektuurist.

FLBK4366XVML0883ECUQ3868GKGC9050IMG_1484XTPY4943VIJD1143SSWI0673LYMG5825Processed with VSCO with c1 presetOne place what I really recommend to visit is Suomenlinna Sea Fortress. It is built on five different sized island. It is a Unesco World Heritage Site and one of the most popular attractions in Finland. It is shaped by three historic eras when it helped to defend first Sweden, then Russia and ultimately Finland. It offers a unique experience for visitors thanks to its museums, events and restaurants and just beautiful nature. It is possible to visit the Suomenlinna island all year round by public transport ferry. The ferry is free of charge with the public transportation card HSL and it leaves from the Market Square. The journey takes around 15 minutes. The main means of transport on the island is on foot. Even the bicycle is a bit uncomfortable because of the cobblestones.

By the way Suomenlinna is not only a tourist attractions. Around 850 people actually live there every day. Suomenlinna is a district of Helsinki which has no street names. The addresses are combined with the names of the different parts of the island and the house numbers. On 1918-1919 there was a prison on the island. There was around ten thousands prisoners of which 1,500 died because of the starvation, 80 of them were executed. Even today there are prisoners on the island who work there under the orders of the Finnish Ministry of Justice. Most of the barracks and repair works of the trenches have been made by those 60 prisoners. There is a long underground tunnel which connects the mainland and Suomenlinna. The main and only purpose of the tunnel is the better service providing for the people. The tunnel can be accessed only with a special permit.

Ma väga soovitan külastada Suomenlinna merekindlust. Kindlus on ehitatud viie erineva suurusega saare peale. Tegemist on Unesco maailmapärandi nimekirja kantud kohaga ja üks populaarsemaid vaatamisväärsusi Soomes. Suomenlinna on kujundatud kolme ajaloolise ajastu poolt, aidates esmaslt kaitsta Rootsist, siis Venemaad ning lõpuks Soomet. Külastajad saavad kogeda erinevaid elamusi, seal on muuseumid, üritused, restoranid, kaunis loodus. Suomenlinna saart on võimalik aastaringselt külastada ühistranspordi alla kuuluva praamiga. Praamile pääseb Helsingi ühistranspordi HSL-i kaardiga tasuta. Praam väljub Turuplatsilt ning sõit võtab aega umbes 15 minutit. Saarel liigutakse enamasti jalgsi, isegi jalgrattaga on seal munakivide tõttu pisut ebamugav sõita.

Kusjuures Suomenlinna pole ainult turismiobjekt. See on tegelikult umbes 850 inimese koduks. Suomenlinna on Helsingi linnaosa, millel puuduvad tänavanimed. Aadressid moodustuvad saare eriosade nimedest ja majanumbritest. Aastatel 1918-1919 asus saarel vangla. Vange oli umbes kümmekond tuhat, kellest 1500 suri nälga ja haigustesse, neist 80 hukati. Tänagi on saarel vangid, kes käivad Soome justiitsministeeriumi korraldusega seal tööd tegemas. Suurem osa vallidest ja kaitsekraavide parandustöödest on just nende kinnipeetute tehtud. Saarele tuuakse kaupa ja abivägesid ning tullakse vajaduse korral kiirelt abi andma piki maa-alust tunnelit, mis ongi ehitatud ainult saare elanike paremaks teenindamiseks. Tunnelisse pääseb vaid vastava loa ettenäitamisel.

IMG_4749IMG_4512IMG_4755IMG_4753IMG_4621IMG_4752IMG_4640IMG_4748IMG_4747IMG_4750The return journey offers nice panoramic views to Helsinki.

Suomenlinnast tagasi Helsingisse sõites avanevad ilusad panoraamvaated linnale.

IMG_4754Another really photogenic attraction is Sibelius Monument. According to Finns this is one of the most beloved abstract sculptures in the world. It is dedicated to Jean Sibelius who is a world famous composer. The monument is resembling organ pipes and it is made of welded steel with over 600 pipers and with the bust of the composer on one side. The monument offers many different photo opportunities.

Üks tõeliselt forogeeniline vaatamisväärsus on Sibeliuse monument. Soomlaste sõnul on tegemist ühe armastatuima abstraktse skulptuuriga maailmas. Monument on pühendatud maailmakuulsale heliloojale Jean Sibeliusele. Monument meenutab oreli torusid ja on valmistatud keevitatud terasest, kus on üle 600 orelitoru, mille ääres on helilooja büst. Monument pakub mitmeid erinevaid fotovõimalusi.

OFGZ7960IBKB7363IMG_0649IMG_0648Probably the most beautiful, colorful and photographed street in Helsinki is Huvilakatu street which translates to “villa street”.

Arvatavasti on Helsingi kõige ilusamaks, värvikirevamaks ja enim pildistatud tänavaks Huvilakatu tänav, mis tõlkes tähendab Villade tänavat.

Cafe Regatta is a small red cottage cafe by the sea and known for the best hot chocolate and cinnamon buns in town. It has a vintage countryside interior and decoration. This cafe is a popular destination for both locals and tourists.

I actually Googeled places to visit in Helsinki myself and I ended up with a toilet recommendation. This restroom is special because it offers panoramic views to Helsinki. The restroom belongs to the Solo Sokos Hotel Torni rooftop bar. It is possible to get free panoramic views of Helsinki from the bar, but more unusual is to get the perfect views to Helsinki from the rooftop bar’s toilet. Probably the weirdest “attraction” on this list, but totally worth it.
Enne Helsingisse minekut ma tegelikult Googeldasin erinevaid kohti, mida seal külastada. Üks huvitav leht soovitas külastada Sokos Hotell Torni katusebaari tualetti. Tualeti teeb eriliseks see, et sealt avaneb panoraamvaade Helsingile. Baarist on võimalik tasuta nautida ilusaid panoraamvaateid, ilma vahepealse klaasseinata. Tegemist on tõenäoliselt kõige veidrama kohaga siin listis, kuid külastamist väärt!

The cutest cafe is probably Moomin Cafe. Moomins are a national icon in Finland. They are part of Finnish identity, even their national airline Finnair uses the Moomins as an ambassador. It is said that there’s probably not one Finnish family that don’t own a Moomin mug by the company Arabia. Moomins are created by Tove Jansson who is from Helsinki. The Moomins are a fictional troll family and they live in a Momminvalley. Moomin’s were a part of my childhood, I used to watch the cartoon and sing the Moomin’s song. They have Moomins novels, characters, mugs, plates, cakes, biscuits, drinks in the cafe. Right next to the cafe is Moomin shop where it is possible to purchase some Moomin souvenirs.
Kõige armsam kohvik on Muumi kohvik. Muumid on Soomes rahvuslikuks ikooniks. Kohvikus on olemas Muumi raamatud, pehmed mänguasjad, kruusid, taldrikud, koogid, küpsised, joogid.. Kohe kohviku kõrval asub ka Muumi suveniiripood, kus on võimalik osta Muumidega meeneid.

BCCE2748IMG_1309IMG_1316IMG_1320IMG_1318IMG_1321Who arrives to Helsinki via West Harbor, Helsinki Länsisatama, theirs first welcome  is  probably a sculpture of weird peeing man. The name of the statue is Bad Bad Boy. The statue was created in August 2014 by Tommi Toija for the Mutatis Mutandis exhibition and was moved to West Harbour in October 2016. The statue is 8,5 meters tall and sporting a surprised expression and an amiable blush.

Kes saabub Helsingisse Läänesadama kaugu, neid tervitab esimesena imelik pissiva poisi kuju. Kuju nimi on Bad Bad Boy – paha paha poiss. Kuju lõi Tommi Toija 2014. aastal Mutatis Mutandise näituse jaoks. 2016. aastal paigutati kuju Läänesadamasse. Kuju on 8,5 meetrit pikk õilsa üllatunud, veidi punastava ilmega.

Üks äge baar on ka Clarion Helsingi hotellis asuv Sky Room. Tegemist on Helsingi ühe kõige kõrgema hoonega. FQME9899Processed with VSCO with b1 presetNo matter whether you are a vegan or no, the best burger in town can be found at Levain bakery/ eatery. The eatery-style restaurants serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is also a bakery that focuses on the king of bread, real sourdough bread baked in a stone oven. The Levain can be found on two locations at Töölö and Punavuori. Töölö Levain is opened from Monday to Friday 08:00-21:30 and on Saturday 08:30-21:30. Levain Punavuori is open from Monday to Friday 08:00-19:00 and 08:30-17:00 on Saturdays. They are both closed on Sundays. I had their grilled Veggie Burger of black beans and sweet potato, Levain’s brioche, cheddar, avocado, caramelized onion and aioli. It is one of the best burgers I have even eaten, without a doubt! The black beans and sweet potato cutlet was absolutely amazing.

Pole oluline kas oled vegan või mitte, kõige parema burgeri leiad Levain bakery /eatery pagariärist/söögikohast. Restoranis pakutakse hommiku-, lõuna- ja õhtusööki. Samuti asub seal pagariäri, mis keskendub kõigi leibade kuningale – kiviahjus küpsetatud tõelisele nisujahul põhinevale leivale, mille aluseks on naturaalne juuretis. Levaini võib leida kahes asukohas Töölö ja Punavuori tänavatelt. Töölö Levain on avatud esmaspäevast reedeni 08:00-21:30 ja laupäeviti 08:30-21:30. Levain Punavuori on avatud esmaspäevast reedeni 08:00-19:00 ja laupäeviti 08:30-17:00. Mõlemad resotranid on pühapäeviti suletud. Mina proovisin nende grillitud mustade ubade ja bataadiga vegan burgerit. Tegemist on ühe kõige parema burgeriga, mida ma kunagi söönud olen. Bataadi-oakotlet oli lihtsalt nii maitsev.

IMG_1537IMG_1529IMG_1531I hope you got some ideas what to see on your next Helsinki trip.

Loodan väga, et leidsid mõned ideed, mida oma järgmisel Helsingi reisil külastada.
