Edinburgh

Scotland is really pretty country with its picture perfect nature and old buildings. Scotland has approximately 790 islands, only 130 of which are inhabited. Scotland is well-known thanks to the famous Loch Ness lake and the monster who should live there. At least I remember the stories of the Loch Ness Monster from the English classes of my childhood. Loch Ness lake is another freshwater lakes of more than 600 square miles that Scotland has. The first recorded appearance of the Loch Ness Monster occurred in 565 AD, it attached one of St. Columbia’s followers in the loch. Nowadays most of the souvenirs are with the little green Nessie on it.

Šotimaa on tõeliselt ilus riik. Seal on täiuslik loodus ja vanad majad. Šotimaal on umbes 790 saart, millest küll ainult 130 on asutatud. Šotimaa on tuntud tänu kuulsale Loch Nessi järvele ja seal väidetavalt elavale koletisele. Vähemalt minul meenub esimese asjana Lock Nessi koletis, kellest sai koolis inglise keele tundides palju loetud. Loch Nessi järv on üks paljudest Šotimaal asuvaid enam kui 600 ruutmeetri suuruseid mageveejärvi. Lock Nessi koletise esmakordne ilmutus leidis aset aastal 565 pKr, mida kinnitas üks Püha Kolumbia järgijatest. Tänapäeval on enamik suveniire väikese rohelise Nessiega.

IMG_7734Scotland belongs to the United Kingdom and is the second largest country in UK. The capital city of Scotland is Edinburgh which is only second largest city in Scotland after Glasgow. Also the second largest financial center after London in UK. There are so many spectacular places to visit in Scotland but since I had short weekend getaway I only had time to visit Edinburgh. The area of the Edinburgh is 264 km2 and there lives around 488,050 people. One interesting fact is that there are as many Scottish people living in North America as in Scotland.

Public transportation connections between the city center and Edinburgh Airport are really fast and convenient. In front of the Airport, from bus stop D, there goes the bus to the center and back in every 10 minutes around the clock. One way ticket costs £4,40 and open return ticket £7,50. The busses are very comfortable double-deckers and there is also free Wifi and USB chargers.

Šotimaa on Suurbritannia autonoomne osa ning suuruselt teine riigi autoomne piirkond. Šotimaa pealinn on Edinburgh, mis on piirkonna suuruselt teine linn peale Glasgowi. Edinburgh on Londoni järelt suuruselt teine finantskeskus Suurbritannias. Šotimaal on mitmeid  tähelepanuväärseid kohti, mida külastada.

IMG_7402Thanks to its spectacular rocks, rustic buildings, huge collection of medieval and classic architecture, including numerous stone decorations, Edinburgh is often considered one of the most lively cities in Europe. All these historical and cultural attractions have made it the United Kingdom’s second most popular tourist destination. Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and it also has a fantastic position. The view falls on all sides – green hills, the hint of the blue sea, the silhouettes of the buildings and the red cliffs. Edinburgh was built on seven hills and it has more listed buildings than anywhere in the world.

IMG_7488When the most normal weather in Scotland as well in Edinburgh is cloudy and rainy then I was super lucky. I practically saw no clouds, only sun and blue sky during my trip in the middle of January. The weather was quite warm. I started my exploring really early in the morning, before the sunrise and it got super cold during the sunrise but afterwards it was pretty decent. Thanks to their often rainy weather the raincoat was invented in 1824 in Scotland by Charles Machintosh who was a chemist born in Glasgow.

ECA5B3DC-FE8A-4700-BFAB-CBF971861B36Edinburgh is very walkable city, you can really explore it by foot. It has romantic narrow streets, passageways, numerable stairs, hidden church yards on every step you take.. why to miss it because of the public transportation..

Tegemist on väga kõnnitava linnaga. Igal sammul on romantilised kitsad tänavad, läbikäigud, loendamatud trepid, varjatud kirikuaiad.. Milleks sellest ühistransporti kasutades ilma jääda..

4F2282D1-48D4-479D-BA3C-78BA3563669FMost of the structures in the Old Town have remained in their original from over the years. The Old Town was listed as a UNESCO Heritage site in 1995.

Edinburgh was the first city to be called the UNESCO city of Literature. There is the National Library of Scotland, the Museum of Writers, the Scottish Center of Story Telling, the Library of Poetry and many other libraries to visit. Also these building looks fascinating! There are many world famous authors from Scotland also, for example Arthur Conan Doyle who is known thanks to ‘Sherlock Holmes‘ stories, J.K. Rowling who wrote ‘Harry Potter‘ books, Robert Louis Stevenson and his ‘Treasure Island‘. If you love Harry Potter then Edinburgh is perfect destination for you! All the city feels like Harry Potter style and there is the Elephant House, which is known as the birthplace of Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling famously penned her first Harry Potter book on napkins there.

Enamik vanalinnas asuvaid ehitisi on püsinud originaalina. Vanalinn kanti UNESCO kultuuripärandi nimistusse 1995. aastal.

Edinburghi puhul on tegemist esimese linnana, mida hakati nimetama UNESCO kirjanduse linnaks. Sealt leiab Šotimaa Rahvusraamatukogu, Kirjanike Muuseumi, Šotimaa Lugude Jutustamise Keskuse, Luuleraamatukogu ja mitmeid teisi raamatukogusid. Ka nende hooned näevad ilusad välja! Šotimaalt on pärit mitmeid maailmakuulsaid autoreid, näiteks Arthur Conan Doyle, kes on tuntud tänu “Sherlock Holmsi” lugusele; J.K Rowling, kes kirjutas “Harry Potteri” teosed; Robert Louis Stevenson, kelle sulest on pärit “Aarete Saar“. Harry Potteri fännide jaoks on Edinburgh ideaalne sihtkoht. Kogu linn on Harry Pottery stiilis ning seal asub Elevandi maja, mida tuntakse Harry Pottery sünnikohana. J.K Rowling kirjutas seal esimesed lood Harry Potterist salvrätikule.

D6B28162-3984-42F8-B9B4-92D75BE9D4B1Edinburgh has many hills which offers free panoramic views of the city. Calton Hill offers one of the best panoramic views of Edinburgh, because most of the major landmarks can be seen from a bird’s eye view. It is best-seen at sunset or sunrise. I visited it during the sunrise and it offered amazing views. I was also lucky to witness wedding shooting where the future husband was wearing traditional Scottish clothes. It was an experience itself. The view from Calton Hill offers one of the most famous views of Edinburgh. It is called Edinburgh’s Acropolis. It is also famous for its collection of historic monuments, which form some of the most important landmarks of the city: National Monument, which is inspired by the Parthenon in Athens. It is intended to commemorate the Scottish servicemen who died in the Napoleonic Wars and it was never completed leaving just the twelve columns you see today. Also Nelson Monument which is shaped like an up-turned telescope, The monument commemorates the death of Admiral Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The monument was completed in 1816. There is also the City Observatory, a Greek temple styled building designed by William Henry Playfair in 1818.

Samuti olin tunnistajaks tulevase pruutpaari pulmapildistamisele, kus tulevane peig kandis Šoti traditsioonilisi riideid. See oli kogemus omaette. Vaade Calton Hillilt pakub Edinburghi ühte kuulsamat vaadet. Kohta nimetatakse ka Edinburghi Akropoliks. Mägi on kuulus oma ajalooliste monumentide kollektsiooni poolest, mis moodustavad linna mõned kõige olulisemad vaatamisväärsused: Rahvusmonument, mis on inspireeritud Ateena Parthenonist. Rahvusmonument on loodud Napoli sõdades hukkunud Šotimaa sõjaväelaste mälestamiseks. Sellel on vaid kaksteist sammast, sest päris valmis ta pole ehitatud. Samuti on seal Nelsoni Monument, mis on ümberpööratud teleskoobi kujuga. Mälestussambaga mälestatakse admiral Lord Nelsoni surma Trafalgari lahingus 1805. aastal. Monument valmis aastal 1816. Lisaks leiab seal William Henry Playfairi 1818. aastal Kreeka templi stiilis disainitudLinna Obserservatooriumi

It is extinct volcano. The summit is around 250 meters above sea level. There are the ruins of St Anthony chapel which was abandoned 14th-century that’s thought to have ties with the nearby remains of Holyrood Abbey. Due my lack of time in the city I didn’t do the full hike, just a small one to get the idea of the views it has to offer. If you take the path to the right near the parking lot then you will experience longer and tougher hike but it will led you past the Salisbury Crags, which are a series of 46-meter cliffs.

Teine suurepäraseid vaateid ja matkamist pakkuv koht on Arthur’s Seat. Tegemist on kustunud vulkaaniga.

The Palace stands at the end of Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile. It is possible to visit the palace inside too, where you can explore 14 magnificent historic and State Apartments including the Throne Room and the Morning Drawing Room, the romantic ruins of the 12th-century Holyrood Abbey and remarkable royal gardens. David I founded it as an Augustinian monastery in 1128. The Abbey prospered. The Palace of Holyroodhouse has been home to royalty for over 500 years. The Palace is open to the public all year round. From April to October it is open from 09:30-18:00 and from November to March from 09:30-16:30. The Palace of Holyroodhouse is closed 19 April, 14 – 25  May, 25 – 26 December and during royal visits. The entrance costs £15.00 for adults. There is also The Queen’s Gallery located in the Palace, it was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in November 2002 as a part of Golden Jubilee celebrations. It now hosts a program of changing exhibitions from the Royal Collections. I visited the Cafe at the Palace which offers simple, home-made dishes from fresh, locally-sourced produce. I tried their Afternoon Tea. It was my first time to experience the Afternoon Tea and I must say it was super nice there. The food was good, the tea tasted awesome, the service was really good! The room was just a bit cold. The price of the Afternoon Tea is much better than in other places.

Kohe Arthur Seati mäe kõrval on Holyroodhouse palee, mis on kuninganna ametlik elukoht Edinburghis. Palee asub linna ajaloolise kuningliku miili lõpus. Lossi on võimalik külastada ka seest, kus on võimalik tutvuda 14 suurepärase ajaloolise toaga ja Palee Riigikorteritega, sealhulgas Trooni tuba ja Hommikune joonistamistuba, 12. sajandi Holyroodi kloostri romantiliste varemetega ja suurepäraste kuninglike aedadega. David I rajas selle 1128. aastal augustinlaste kloostriks. Klooster oli edukas. Holyroodhouse palee on kuninglikule perele koduks olnud juba üle 500 aasta. Palee on avalikkusele avatud aastaringselt. Aprillist oktoobrini on see avatud 09:30-18:00, novembrist märtsini 09:30-16:30. Palee on suletud 19. aprillil, 14-25. mai, 25.-26. detsembril ning kuninglike visiitide ajal. Sissepääs maksab täiskasvanutele £15.00. Siin asuvad ka Kuninganna galerii, mille avas kuninganna 2002. aasta novembris Kuldse Juubeli tähistamise raames. Nüüd korraldab see kuninglike kollektsioonide näituste programmi. Mina külastasin Palee kohvikut, mis pakub kohalikust värskest toorainest valmistatud lihtsaid ja koduseid toite. Mina proovisin nende pärastlõuna teed, afternoon tea’d.

The Royal mile is Edinburgh’s main thoroughfare, it stretches roughly a mile (1,6km) between Edinburgh Castle and The Holyrood Palace. It is one of the oldest parts of the city. The term “royal mile” was first used descriptively in W M Gilbert’s ‘Edinburgh in the Nineteenth Century (1901) “… with its Castle and Palace and the royal mile between”, and was further popularised as the title of a guidebook, published in 1920. Today it is surrounded by shops, restaurants, pubs, visitor attractions. At the Royal Mile there is St Giles’ Cathedral which is an impressive piece of 14th-century architecture. It is dedicated to Saint Giles who was the prominent medieval saint of cripples and lepers. He is also the patron saint of Edinburgh. Visiting this Cathedral is free, but it is expected to leave at least £5 to donation box.

Tegemist on ühe vanima linnaosaga. Mõistet “kuninglik miil” kasutati esmakordselt kirjeldavalt W M Gilberti “Edinburg XIX sajandil (1901): “… koos oma Lossi ja Paleega ja kuningliku miiliga nende vahel”, see muutus veelgi populaarsemaks kui 1920. aastal avaldatud turismiteadmiku pealkirjaks pandi Kuninglik Miil. Tänapäeval on tänav ümbritsetud poodide, restoranide, pubide, vaatamisväärsustega. Tänaval asub ka Püha Gilesi Katedraal, mis on muljeltavaldav 14. sajandi ehitis. Katedraal on pühendatud pühak Gilesile, kes oli silmapaistev keskaegne Edinburghi kaitsepühak. Katedraali külastamine on tasuta, kuid eeldatakse, et välisukse juures olevasse annetuskasti jäetakse vähemalt £5.

The building is comprised of oak, steel and granite. The bold architecture and design is from Enric Miralles who garnered inspiration from the works of famous Scottish artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the diverse landscape of the country.

Šoti Parlament asub Kuningliku miili lõpus, Holyroody Palee ja Arthur Seati kõrval. Hoone ehitamiseks on kasutatud tamme, terast ja graniiti. Julge arhitektuur ja disain on Enric Mirallese loodud, kes sai selleks inspiratsiooni kuulsa Šoti kunstniku Charles Rennie Mackintoshi loomingust ja riigi mitmekesisest maastikust.

IMG_7746One of the most popular tourist sight in Edinburgh is Edinburgh Castle. It is located on the volcanic hill with the sharp cliffs that have been cut by glaciers is the main reason Edinburgh is located here. The oldest part in the castles complex and most likely the oldest building that can be found in Edinburgh is St Margaret’s chapel. It was built presumably around 1130 in the honor of queen Margaret who lived in the 11th century. It is the most visited tourist attraction in Scotland. The castle houses the Honors (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th-century gun Mons Meg, the One O’Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland. The entrance costs £17.50 for adults. From April 1 to September 30 the castle is open from 09:30-18:00 and from October 1 to March 31 it is open from 09:30 to 17:00.

Edinburghi üks kõige populaarsemaid vaatamisväärsusi on Edinburghi loss. Loss asub liustike poolt rajutud teravate kaljudega kaetud vulkaanimäe jalamil. Kabel on arvatavasti ehitatud 1130. aasta paiku 11. sajandil elanud kuninganna Margareti auks. Tegemist on Šotimaa kõige külastatuma turismimagnetiga. Lossis asuvad Šotimaa au ja hiilgus (Kroonjuveelid), Saatusekivid, kuulus 15. sajandist pärit relv Mons Meg, kella ühe relv ja Šotimaa Riiklik Sõjamuuseum. Sissepääs maksab täiskasvanutele £17.50. Loss on avatud 1. aprillist kuni 30. septembrini kell 09:30-18:00 ja 1. oktoobrist kuni 31. märtsini 09:30-17:00.

Don’t miss Dean Village when visiting Edinburgh. It offers really picturesque view. It is a tranquil green oasis on the Water of Leith and first started out as a settlement of the fringes of the city where local millers would live. Once upon a time, eleven mills donned the river, driven by the water’s current. The former mills and miller’s houses make up some of the most prime real estate in Edinburgh.

Kindlasti soovitan külastada Dean Village, mis pakub maalilisi vaateid. Tegemist on rahuliku rohelise oaasiga Leithi vee ääres, mis sai alguse linna äärealade asulatest, kus elasid kohalikud möldrid. Endised veskid ja veskimajad moodustavad esmaklassilise Edinburghi kinnisvara.

It is built in the 19th-century and is one of the most striking landmarks in the Edinburgh city skyline. On the monument’s first floor is the Museum Room where can be discovered more about Scott himself, the tumultuous life, his legacy on international literature, as well as the memorial built in his honor. If you climb 287 steps to the top you can enjoy breathtaking views of Edinburgh and the surrounding countryside. The entrance costs £8.00 for the adults. The Scott Monument is open every day from 10:00 to 16:00.

Scott Monument on suurim kirjaniku mälestusmärk maailmas, millega mäletatakse Šoti romaanikirjanikku Sir Walter Scotti. Monument on avatud iga päev kell 10:00-16:00.

IMG_7822The most iconic photography spot in Edinburgh is the Vennel, which is a pedestrianised and stepped side street. The word Vennel relates to a passageway which leads between the gables of two building. The Vennel offers a unique angle of the Castle of Edinburgh.

Kõige ikoonilisem pilditamiskoht linnas on Vennel, mis on jalakäiatele mõeldud treppidega täidetud kõrvaltänav. Sõna vennel tähistab vahekäiku, mis viib kahe hoone vahele. Vennel pakub ainulaadse nurga alt vaateid Edinburgi lossile.

Victoria street has really pretty colorful buildings. Belford Mews are the brick homes with colorful doors. These were former stables which are now converted into homes. Close to Circus Lane is a Soderberg bakery which is known for their cinnamon buns.

Edinburghis on mitmeid fotogeenilisi tänvaid, kuid minu lemmikuteks oli Circus Lane, Vicotria tänav ja Belford Mews. Victoria tänaval on tõeliselt värvilised hooned. Belford Mewsis asuvad värviliste ustega tellistest majad.

The most known is the Advocates Close in Royal Mile. The view from the Royal Mile side offers a classic and iconic view of the Scott Monument. It is believed that it dates back from 1544. It takes its name from Sir James Stewart of Goodtrees, who was the last Advocate of Scotland in office during the time of the Restoration, Revolution and Union.

Edinburghis on mitmeid kitsaid järske tänavaid. Neist kõige tuntum on Kuninglikul Miilil asuv Advocates Close.

New College was founded as the theological college of the Free Church of Scotland. It opened for classes in 1843. Today New College is two things. It is the place in Edinburgh where the Church of Scotland trains its ministerial candidates, and the name of the building which houses both that training college and the University’s School of Divinity. The School of Divinity offers broader academic study across a wide range of religious beliefs, ancient and modern, with no expectation that staff hold any particular faith perspective.

Uue Kolledži rajamine on usu konfliktidest tekkinud kirglikkuse tulemus. Uus Kolledž asutati Šotimaa Vaba Kiriku Teoloogiakolledžina. Õppetööks avati see 1843. aastal. Täna on see kaks asja.

Actually was whisky invented in China. It was first distilled by monks in Ireland in the early 15th century, before reaching Scotland 100 years later. Also 70% of the UK’s overall gin is produced in Scotland. Even three of the world’s best-selling gins are made in Scotland: Hendrick’s, Gordon’s and Tanqueray. I tried both Scotch and their gin. For the experience I went to Usquabae Whisky Bar And Larder which is said to be one of the best Edinburgh’s Whisky Bar and Restaurants. The cocktails were really good and the service was nice also. The bar is located on the 2-4 Hope Street and it is open from Sunday to Thursday at 12:00-00:00 and Fridays and Saturdays from 12:00-01:00.

11. sajandisse ulatuva ajalooga Šoti viski on Šotimaa identiteedi oluline osa. Tegelikult on viski leiutatud Hiinas.

85C5458D-AD2F-4439-8B36-2EEB5473B458If you want to have a cheap and tasty breakfast then head to Snax Cafe. The room itself is a bit small, so it is actually better place for takeaway.

Kohvik ise on veidi väike, seega on tegemist pigem kaasaostmise kohvikuga.

IMG_7807There many Scotland’s most famous inventions which were actually developed elsewhere. For example kilts originated in Ireland, tartans have been found in Bronze Age central Europe and bagpipes are thought to have come from ancient central Asia.

Tegelikult on mitmed Šotimaa kuulsad leiutised pärit kusagilt mujalt. Näiteks šoti seelikud on pärit Iirimaalt, šotiruuduline kangas on leitud Kesk-Euroopa pronksiajast ja torupillid pärinevad arvatavalt Kesk-Aasiast.

One interesting fact about Scotland is that their official animal is the Unicorn.
Also one weird thing is that the sink has different taps for hot and cold water.
Üks huvitav fakt Šotimaa kohta on see, et nende ametlikuks loomaks on ükssarv.
Samuti on seal imelikud kraanid, kus soe ja külm vesi tulevad mõlemad erinevast teineteisest eemal asuvast kraanist.

IMG_7423I hope that you got some inspiration to visit this absolutely beautiful country and city. I, myself would definitely like to go back to explore more.
